MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Patrick Copen is the highest draft pick from Marshall University in seven years. The Parkersburg Catholic High School graduate was selected in the seventh round of the MLB Draft Monday afternoon. He was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 220th pick.

Copen is the highest pick from the Thundering Herd since Herbert Hoover graduate Corey Bird was picked in the seventh round of the 2016 draft.
Copen emerged as the No. 1 starter for Marshall in their weekend rotation during his junior season. In 14 starts, Copen went 2-9 with an ERA of 5.82. With an elite fastball in his arsenal, Copen struck out 83 batters in 72 2/3 innings of work. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound right-hander finished fifth in the Sun Belt Conference in strikeouts this season.
His approximate contract value is slotted in at $228,000.
